February’s are typically quiet for major film releases, but next weekend will play host to three highly anticipated releases: The LEGO Batman Movie, Fifty Shades Darker, and John Wick: Chapter 2....

Todd Phillips’ Joker is now expected to beat the previous October box office opening record set by Venom, following its premiere on the film festival circuit this past weekend. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are in talks with director Jon Watts to return to direct the currently untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, which is set to be released after Avengers 4 in 2019. Spider-Man: Homecoming has been a big success for both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and for Sony, as audiences have embraced the partnership made between the two companies for this Avengers-integrated version of the web-slinger. A lot of this can be attributed to not only the fantastic performance of Tom Holland as a very teenage and naive Peter Parker, but the unique John Hughes-style high school comedic tone that Watts was able to achieve in his big budget debut....

The Apple Company Store on its 1 Infinite Loop campus, which closed for major refurbishment back in June, will re-open at 10am on Saturday – the same day its first Belgium store opens. Apple announced the Grand Reopening on its retail site. With Jony Ive now having responsibility for all aspects of design – including retail stores – it should be interesting to see how it’s changed. The Company Store has always been quite a different experience to all other Apple retail stores, with no iPhones, iPads or Macs on sale....

Jony Ive was one of ten ’eminent figures’ awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Oxford yesterday. Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit is a dark comedy-drama, set on Nazi Germany, about a boy who is a big fanatic of Adolf Hitler yet feels his views change when he encounters a Jewish girl that his mother hid in their house. The movie divided critics because of the Nazi’s comedic depiction and the light treatment of its subject matter. Nevertheless, it reaped many awards for the season and gained 6 nominations for this year’s Oscars....

As expected, Apple SVP of Design Jony Ive made an appearance at the WIRED25 event today. The company’s head designer was interviewed by Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The conversation started off with technology addiction. In response to the ongoing concerns regarding the topic, Ive says that it just depends on how you use your devices. On the same topic of addiction, he notes that in “the nature of innovating” it’s impossible to “predict all the consequences....

Although word is quiet on the Deathstroke movie front, actor Joe Manganiello says the character is still someone the powers to be want to happen. At 4 p.m. ET, the annual lighting of the John Lennon Imagine Peace Tower kicked off a month-long optical tribute to the murdered Beatles artist. And this year his widow Yoko Ono is live streaming it. The Imagine Peace Tower is an ambitious undertaking. It’s lit each year in Iceland — in a ceremony led by Ono –on October 9 and stays lit until December 8. The dates note Lennon’s birthday and the date of his death, respectively....
